ALPHONSE MUCHA [YEARS OF FREEDOM.] 1918. 26 7/8x20 1/4 inches. Condition A-: minor tears in margins. Hand-signed and inscribed in pen. Framed. This black and white allegorical scene of the birth of the Czech State was based on a drawing of Mucha's and was never realized as a painting. It has, however, appeared in many other printed forms, including calendars and even a schoolroom visual to help promote nationalism in Czech schools. The image depicts the mythological Czech Queen Libuse being handed a crown, surrounded by throngs of admiring children, athletes and peasants. The image is hand-signed and inscribed by Mucha in pen.
